Permit pulled for new hangar at Air Capital Flight Line

Plans are in place for another new building on the Air Capital Flight Line in southeast Wichita.

According to city-county records, a $7 million building permit has been pulled for construction of a new aircraft hangar at 4174 S. Oliver on the ACFL property.

The permit holder is identified as Jimmy Baker Construction BC and the planned building is identified as 172J.

Representatives of ACFL did not respond to requests for additional information from the WBJ on Monday.

The property is comprised of the sprawling industrial and office campus once occupied by the Boeing Co.

Air Capital Flight Line was formed when the land and buildings were bought by a group of local investors and developers headed by Dave Murfin and Johnny Stevens in late 2014, following Boeing’s (NYSE: BA) closure of its remaining local defense operations.

The company’s commercial operations had previously been spun off into Spirit AeroSystems Inc. in 2006.

Spirit (NYSE: SPR) is among the primary tenants at ACFL, where leased facilities house production of the forward fuselage on the 787 Dreamliner and a new one built in 2019 allowed for expanded local work on the 767 program.

The company has also taken up the 293,000 square-foot hangar most visible at the property’s main entrance, though the work done there has not been publicly detailed.

Other existing tenants at the ACFL, which is adjacent to McConnell Air Force Base, include the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University and Bombardier.

NIAR in September announced that it had joined a program to help convert existing Boeing 777-300 passenger jets into cargo aircraft in work that would be based from its operations on the property.
